At Home With: Penelope Goldstone

Fashion editor and stylist Penelope Goldstone welcomes us into the home she shares with her husband and two children. We spoke about the intersection between fashion and interiors, collecting objects with meaning, and how a bespoke dining table became the starting point for one of Atelier278's most enduring designs.


You have spent your career working with fashion, where an eye for proportion, texture and detail is everything. Does that same instinct follow you into the way you live at home? I would say so yes. Fashion and interiors are inextricable linked and I approach my hope decor in much the same way I build an outfit or an edit, focusing on complimentary colours and textures. I’m much more restrained when it comes to my home though. With fashion, I’ve seen so many trends come and go that I’ve been conscious about choosing a home decor that is relatively neutral, classic and timeless. 


Your work is built around looking closely. When you come home at the end of the day, what do you most want your house to give you? Peace and comfort. 


Your AUGUSTUS table began as a bespoke commission for your home, and went on to inspire a design in the Atelier278 collection. What was behind your choice of its generous shape, filled and honed travertine, and softly architectural finish? I’m so pleased, it was really fun working on this project with you. It was a bit of a joint project with my husband. I am obsessed with natural materials and wanted something a little more unique than the usual white marble. My childhood home features travertine stone floors so it seemed like a special stone to pick for our new home. The octagonal legs were my husband’s idea, he works in design and loves geometric shapes.

Are there particular objects you are always drawn to collecting or bringing home, perhaps chairs, lamps, ceramics, books, textiles or old photographs? We are big readers so have a lot of books dotted around the house, as well as knick knacks from travels and moments in my career and life. A vase by Anissa Kermiche that she sent me after I interviewed her, shells from our honeymoon, busts of my body made during both my pregnancies… a lot of decorative objects collected organically throughout the years.

What has survived every move, clear-out or change of taste? Nothing! This is our second home. After renting furnished flats in London for a decade, when we bought our first home in Surrey we were desperate to shake the bland rental look and so went quite big on colour and art deco vibes. Which in retrospect wasn’t really ‘us’, so we sold a lot before we moved into our second home and found our style. 

Your home is beautifully put together, but it is also home to two young children. What has become more important to you since becoming a mother, and what have you become less precious about? Thank you! I’m a bit of a tidy freak but that’s not very compatible with two little kids who love toys, dressing up and playing, so I’ve had to make my peace with that. That said, I can never go to bed without tidying all their toys and I’m always on the lookout for good toy storage. I know I’ll miss it when they outgrow their toys though.

What was the first thing you bought for this home that made it begin to feel like yours? Our bed by Porada. It was a huge splurge but it felt like our first proper ‘grown up’ piece of furniture and it was worth it. 

Where does everyone tend to gather at home, and what is it about that space that draws people in? When we are hosting, which is a little less often these days, we all gather round the dining table, enjoying food and games. Most of the time though, it’s in the open space that connects the kitchen and the lounge as that’s our kids’ play area and where grown ups and little ones can socialise together. 

What is always on the table when you are having people over? Good food, French wine, candles and pretty table linen. 

What is inspiring you at the moment, whether it is an object, a book or a place to visit? I’m reading This Could Be Everything by Eva Rice, a story of loss and love set in the 90s. I seem to be gravitating towards books set in that decade at the moment. I’m celebrating my 40th this year so I think I’m feeling quite nostalgic for that decade.
