Retail, Reconsidered:

Beyond Display

There has been a quiet shift in how retail spaces are conceived.

There has been a quiet shift in how retail spaces are conceived.

Increasingly, they are no longer treated as places of transaction, but as interiors in their own right. Spaces to spend time in. Spaces that feel closer to a private residence than a traditional store.

This way of thinking has shaped the direction of our work.

Atelier278 pieces have largely been placed within private homes, where material and proportion are considered with care. It felt like a natural progression for this approach to extend into retail environments, where the same attention to atmosphere and balance is now expected.

What began as standalone pieces has gradually expanded into a broader language of elements within a space. Display cabinets, both freestanding and fitted. Tables, seating and joinery that sit within the architecture rather than apart from it.

Materials follow the same logic. Stone remains central, but is now paired with upholstery, carpentry and glass, allowing for a more complete expression of the interior. In certain contexts, this extends to functional considerations such as security glazing, without compromising the overall aesthetic.

All pieces continue to be hand crafted to order in the UK, allowing for a considered approach to scale, proportion and finish, and making it possible to adapt designs or develop entirely bespoke pieces in response to a project.

This approach is best understood in situ.

With Nothing Underneath

At With Nothing Underneath, the interior reflects the brand’s approach to dressing. Restrained, assured, and rooted in longevity. Pieces sit quietly within the space, supporting a material palette that feels familiar yet resolved.

Réalisation Par

At Réalisation Par, the atmosphere shifts. The interior carries a more expressive identity, where tone and placement create a stronger sense of presence. Within this context, our pieces introduce weight and permanence, balancing the space without interrupting its flow.

Sellier

Our collaboration with Sellier extends across three London boutiques. At Motcomb Street, the OTTO Dining Table sits alongside bespoke onyx and timber display cabinets and desks, developed specifically for the space. The intention was to create elements that feel architectural, while allowing the product to remain central.

At their Brompton Road flagship, a travertine bench with mint toned linen upholstery anchors the interior, introducing a softer material contrast (pictured below).

Across each space, the role of the piece shifts slightly. Not as a focal point, but as part of the overall composition.

Outside of the Studio

For those encountering the work outside of the studio, these environments offer a clearer sense of how each piece sits within a finished interior.

Each project begins in the same way. With the space, and how it is intended to be experienced.
